Author analyzed palpable breast lesions of 1012 patients who visited and were treated at the Department of General Surgery, Seoul National University ´Hospital, from January, 1961 to December, 1975.
1. Of 1012 cases, 956 patients were female and 56 were male.
2. The most prevalent age group in female was 30 to 39 years, followed by twenties.
3. 49.7% of breast masses was from 2 cm to 3.9 cm in size and 31.7%was above 4 cm in size.
4. The lesions were located in the left breast in 431 female patients and in the right breast in 396 female patients and bilateral in 59 cases. The most frequent site was upper outer quadrant (36.6%).
5. The most common lesion in female was fibroadenoma(27.7%), followed by malignancy (26..4%) and mammary dysplasis(21.9%).
6. In the twenties, fibroadenoma(58. 3%) was most common, in. the thirties, mammary dysplasia was most common; and in the forties, malignancy was most common(35.2%). Above fifty years old, malignancy comprised of 66.9% of palpable breast lesions of this age group.
7. The more the size of mass is bigger, the more the incidence of malignancy increased. When the size of mass was below 2 cm, only 15.7% was malignant and when, it was above 4 cm, 42:6% was malignant.
8. In carcinoma the axillary lymph node metastasis was positive in 67.9% in radically is waste-ctomized series; when the size of mass is below 2 cm the incidence of metastasis was 20.8% and when it is above 2 cm the incidence was 73.9%.
9: In malignancy, the most frequent site of lesion was, in the upper outer quadrant(45. 5%) and the right breast was slightly more frequently involved than the left.
10. The´ most prevalent age group, of fibroadenoma was 20 to 29 years; in mammary dysplasia 30 to 39 years and in malignancy 40 to 49 years.
11. The accuracy of clinical diagnosis was 70%. Of 258 cases diagnosed as malignant clinically, 30.6% was benign and of 608 cases diagnosed as benign clinically, 8. 1 %was malignant.
